1932: John Galsworthy (1867 – 1933)
Am 14. August 1867 in Kingston Hill, erblickte John Galsworthy das Licht der Welt. Er war einer der bekanntesten englischen Dramatiker und Schriftsteller. „The Forsyte Saga“, seine Romanreihe, gilt als der Klassiker der modernen englischen Literatur. John Galsworthy stammt aus einem wohlhabenden Elternhaus und besuchte, aufgrund dessen, eine angesehene Privatschule in Harrow. Später studierte er am New College, der Oxford- Universität, Jura und wurde 1890 Barrister. Gelangweilt von seinem Beruf als Rechtsanwalt, ging er zur See.
Auf seiner Schifffahrtsreise lernte er den polnischen Schriftsteller Joseph Conrad kennen. Joseph Conrad weckte Galsworthys Interesse an Literatur und somit veröffentlichte er seine ersten Werke unter dem Pseudonym John Sinjohn.
Enorme Anerkennung erhielt der englische Schriftsteller auch für sein erstes Schauspiel von 1906 „ The Silver Box“. Der erste Teil „The Man of Property“ der Erfolgsserie „ The Forsyte Saga“ entstand im selben Jahr. John Galsworthy wurde 1921 zum ersten Präsidenten der internationalen Schriftstellervereinigung P.E.N. Im Jahre 1932 bekam er den Nobelpreis für Literatur verliehen und starb ein Jahr später an den Folgen eines Gehirntumors.
